Oops, I just realized I might have mis-implied something. When I
said 'virtually identical machines', I meant regarding *software*
installation and configuration.
The recent post from James Cloos, with his "-march=pentium3 CFLAGS"
comment, made me realize that I hadn't clarified that the *hardware*
of these two boxes is different. I'm not used to caring that much,
but now that it's looking like it may be an optimizer problem, I
realize that this info may be relevant.
So:
- The working case is a 64-bit installation, on a
"AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+"
- The failing case is a 32-bit installation, on a
"Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz"
[ As reported from /proc/cpuinfo ]
