-------------------------------------------- FOR THE ATTENTION OF: Mrs Ann Cryer MP for Keighley House Of Commons London SW1A 0AA Monday 8 September 2003 Dear Mrs Ann Cryer, the UK labour party, practically alone among the European left wing parties, but with a good and consistent right wing support (among them, UK conservatives), is promoting a strong laws on patenting of software and ideas. As software users and producers, we are EXTREMELY concerned about this proposal, which we urge you to stop. The reasons for stopping it are: 1)It is going to seriously damage the market of software developers in Europe, giving even more advantage to other countries (as India) with higher technology e more sensible legislation. 2)It is going to increase the power of big companies on small and medium business, 3)It is going to give even more power to American multinational companies on the European market (indeed there are rumors, from relevant sources, of the whole process being promoted by Microsoft through BSA). 4)It is going to seriously damage the Open Source businesses and community. Promoter of this weird proposal, which is the envy of the most right wing politicians in Europe, is, as usual in the last 7 years, a Labour Party member (Arlene McCarthy). Hope you will answer positively. Best regards
