Since the overlap always appears to be 2 chars wide, could this be
elated to the cr/lf problems we've been seeing?

At the end of mingw.h there is macro WRITEC_NEWLINE
defined as \r\n. This macro should be commented out.
This works for me and fixes a couple of maxima problems:
- describe() now works
- demo() now works
- xmaxima looks better
Well, there is this issue with spurious file names
with ignore-errors during Maxima build.
This is not _terribly_ urgent since workaround
for Maxima exist and works well. Shell we try to
fix the bug before release? I don't know.
