This is a little bit late, but anway...
For me it works with
gcmd 1.01
ProFTPD Version 1.2.10 (via inetd)

The best idea i can come up with is that you may have configured
different permissions for local vs remote user access.
Or you even logged in 'anonymous' (which usually expects a special
homedirectory to be prepared either on disk or virtually created by the server)
with gcmd, and as real user with gftp ?
