MP4 is MPEG-4. Not Apple specific beside the fact that Apple seems to be the only vendor really pushing it, by way of Quicktime.
MPEG-4, unlike FLV, is a *standard*, albeit completely encumbered by patents and such.[1]
Hub [1] which is still a problem for Free Software.
