I suspect this directory is your "target" for any hacks needed.

This wont be enough.
I suspect you'll have to customise everything in teh Ubuntu directory,
or create a gNewSense directory (with customised versions of all the
Ubuntu fils).
Is it a lot of work?
Yes.
This is what happens when you create a new distro :)
