Since this is essentially the same as being able to set the source MSISDN
of a SM, its a feature which is not made available to end users, in order
to prevent fraud.. Telstra, and others who use this feature, will have a
direct, fixed link into the SMSC, and use a different protocol. While it
is possible, in theory, for you to send a SM with a different source
MSISDN through a handset (or at least to it; some handsets will notice
and reject the message, or "fix" it for you), when it is received by the
SMSC it will automatically replace it with your own number.

Using text, rather than a numeric MSISDN, requires the change of one of
the address type flags in the SM header, which should be easy enough to
change in theory, but since the SMSC would stomp on whatever you put in,
I've never tried it.

Additionally, even if you could get a message out, recipients would not be
able to reply to messages sent like this, unless the SMSC through which
the reply was sent had been programmed specifically to recognise and
re-route those replies.
