Hello

I am not a programmer(a bit of C and Perl)  but am willing to test and
code whatever I can on the 3001/8110 driver.

Any help to start me in the right direction will be helpful.

This is true, but I haven't been able to test the current 3110 driver
with a 8110, and would be glad if you could try it. However, the driver
doesn't currently support much more than --identify, --status and the
sending/receiving of SMS's [and even that is a bit broken with respect
to charsets].

Now that 0.5.0 proper is out I could again take a look at the 3110
driver and perhaps add some more features. Proper SMS encoding,
phonebook handling and data calls are on my list, in this order. But no
promises made, as always...

I think 0.3.5 does data calls with the 3110/8110, but no guarantees. If
it doesn't work the way you expect, you're pretty much on your own...
0.4.x definitely doesn't as its 3110 driver is totally broken.

(I'm not the author of the 3110 series driver, I just made it work again
during the 0.5.0pre series, rewriting lots of it)
