first make sure you can read the fake SMS number 2
use the sample gnokiirc form 0.6.29 or later and execute the command

gnokii --phone fake --getsms SM 2

message text is:
Hello! vowels àèìòù euro €

it should work with any UTF-8 locale, eg. LANG=en_US.utf8

if you can read the fake message but not one of your messages, we need
the debug output, see http://wiki.gnokii.org/index.php/Bug_report
