I've found them handy for a few situations. I use them to track vim,
but mostly because it matches how Bram releases. For each major
release, he has a series of pre-releases, and then he gives the official
release. After this, come numbered patches, starting with 1. It
matches the numbering scheme that arch uses with --fix and --seal.
