There was some discussions here about adding a preprecommit hook. I don't remember the conclusion. A solution would be to use a wrapper script to commit.
Tom agreed that it made sense to add. As long as there are clearly defined points for adding hooks, and they are only added after requested (instead of in advance), then it is fine. They have not been added yet, but they have been "accepted". I second the build-script generating a version file, though. John =:->
