Yes.

When communication network insists that only members of the network
shall communicate between each other, at that point it becomes private
network, centralized, there is emotional threat to stay in that
network or to lose contacts to family and friends.

With phone communication, we do not have that emotional threats, we
can write down phone numbers and access our family and friends from
any network. It is decentralized, despite the fact that large
companies are providing us with support. But if we don't like one
company, we can switch to other within minutes in example of
purchasing a new SIM card, or within days. Some countries have had or
still have centralized country based phone network, but even them can
communicate with other countries and other phone networks.

When using Whatsapp, one can communicate with Whatsapp users only if
one uses Whatsapp.

Either use it, or you lose it.

That is the message Whatsapp, Facebook, Telegram are sending to its
users. It is constant emotional threat. Users are used, and owners of
network do not care of the freedom.

Another example is https://Gab.com network, so far I know, it is based on
Mastodon, it is part of Fediverse and people can communicate to them
and they resist the free speech suppression. Maybe there are whatever
negative groups inside, but that is free speech.

Nobody complains on negative social groups inside of Tor
network or Retroshare, then why should we complain for more public Gab
network.

Their management goes into different direction, they do not value
centralization, rather decentralization, they do have a business model
that works, without a vendor lock in and emotional threats to the
useds.
