Well, the problem is that as far as I know (I disclaim this belief is not substantiated by any documentation, even though I did find the manuals)!

Now that I have located and downloaded the manuals, I have only to read them. Here is a link to the site which is inclusive of the APRS manual too.

If gpsd can just send the NMEA data out a serial port in the absence of it being in response to a request for a specific type of string, then, yes, your idea would work with perfection!

No easy, or even somwhat hard, way to get gpsd to respond to NMEA
commands.  OTOH, gpsd can easily convert your Earthmate output to NMEA
and then feed it out a serial port for your radio.  Then just hope
that what gpsd outputs is what the radio needs.  Since gpsd will send
lat/lon every secnd that should be all you need.
