Following up on this, I installed the fix for Bug#34951 and closed the bug
report.
Although the patch for bug#33249 is incorrect for multiple reasons, its basic
idea should improve performance significantly for real-world cases (including
cases described by other bug reports, such as Bug#38322 I think). I'm looking
into fixing the patch and should have a fix reasonably soon.
