Many people have both 75dpi and 100dpi fonts in their font paths.

Not quite -- xdpyinfo calculates the actual dot pitch of the monitor
which is probably not exactly 75 or 100. My display, for example, says:
screen #0:
dimensions: 1152x900 pixels (309x230 millimeters)
resolution: 95x99 dots per inch
And, of course, if you have multiple screens (and some people do),
you'll get information for each of them.
