It works also with the current CVS.

To cite the original manual:
Text blocks are pulled out from the table, processed separately by
troff, and replaced in the table as a solid block. [...about line
length...] The other parameters (point size, font, etc.) used in
setting the block of text are those in effect at the beginning of
the table and any table format specifications of size, spacing and
font, using the p, v, and f modifiers to the column key-letters.
With other words, the settings before the table start are taken as
the default settings for a text block.
