Since I am not the one who introduced, nor fixed, this bug
in .DS, for now I can only venture a conjecture as to what
happened. In order to make .EQ work with the broken .DS, a
crude crutch had to be introduced that should compensate for
the erroneously increased line length. Whatever kind soul
fixed the .DS bug in 1.22.4 was unaware of the .EQ crutch
and left it in. As a result, it continues shortening the
line length.
I have assmed you shouldn't mind if I forwarded your valu-
able report to the mailing list.
