Ted would often provide immediately, subject only to timezones, a simple 
solution or workaround for a problem, usually accompanied by an 
explanation of how the problem arose. His occasional off-list remarks (a 
sentence or two) showed his sense of humour and his interest in helping.

Though I never met him, I always thought of Ted as a friend. He was that 
sort of man.
