If you are offended on a mailing list, or you see someone else being
offended, I strongly recommend that you start with a *private*
complaint, hoping for a *public* apology.
That reduces the risk that the apology either drowns in an inproductive
flame fest, or becomes impossible due to personal prestige invested in a
public debate.
Only if the private approach doesn't work out, consider escalating the
issue.
