I’m even later. :-)
Well, from my point of the view, the question is not about the past of
GNU but about its future. It appears to me a sane question: What is GNU
doing today in order to prepare its future? In this post, I explore the
question and try to pave one among many others potential ways:

If we are frank about the current governance situation and nothing is
done in the coming years, then for sure, in the near* future GNU will be
some yet another awesome project that remains only as one data point in
the Great History.
*near future: Say the bus factor – I wish all the best to Richard
Stallman –: as far as I know, Richard is a regular human and GNU as
it is today will not survive Richard’s /retirement/. Again, I wish
all the best to Richard!
Cheers,
simon
PS: I’ve not missed Ricardo’s question [1] but still in draft state. :-)
