You were right: the pip version was

pip 0.3.1 from /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages (python 2.6)

I did upgrade it with

$ sudo pip install --upgrade pip

then after running the command 

$ /usr/local/bin/pip --version

I get

pip 1.1 from /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages (python 2.6)

NOT python 2.7 (?) Any reason for that?

Continuing the installation I found a confusing situation and nee your help.
What are the next steps?
Please give me the details.

It seems you have an older version of PIP. Try to update it with the
following command

# pip install --upgrade pip

Check the version
$ /usr/local/bin/pip --version

It should be => 1.1
pip 1.1 from /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages (python 2.7)

Then you should be OK.
