I'm not sure why it doesn't work for you: when I tried it, it just
worked. As far as I understand, it does exactly what you need: it uses
curl to make asynchronous http requests and to replace or add
information in any buffer, even the minibuffer.

gptel probably already has a backend for this too ;)
