This belongs on news:comp.unix.shell.
{ { writer | stdout-reader >&3 2>&4; } 2>&1 | stderr-reader; } 4>&2 3>&1
^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^
You can leave out these parts if you don't care about having
stderr-reader read stdout-reader's stdout and stderr sa well.
