What's your settings in "/etc/security/console.perms"?
I suspect you don't have permissions for /dev/ttyS0 on that machine.
Or if there's no entry present, you need to add above...
<ttyS0>=/dev/ttyS0
...and below...
<console> 0666 <ttyS0> 0666 root

PS: this issue is rather off-topic from the subject of the care-and-feeding of
GCC. It's more of a general Unix or Linux question. On the Unix front, I use
Darwin 6.6, SunOS 5.8, and Mandrake 9.1 these days.
