This message indicates that the termcap/terminfo entry corresponding
to $TERM lacks important functionality, e.g. the ability to position
the cursor.

Odd; the standard termcap/terminfo entries for "linux" should describe
sufficient capabilities to keep "less" happy. For me (with less v346),
the following is the minimum terminfo description required to suppress
the warning:

        linux|minimal linux console description,
