Excellent. Thank you for your thorough help. I was able to get this
working. nvcc seems to wrap around gcc, so I needed to extend the
custom rule to be almost identical to the rules for C code:
$(NVCC) -c $(DEFS) $(DEFAULT_INCLUDES) $(INCLUDES) $(AM_CPPFLAGS) $
(CPPFLAGS) $(AM_CFLAGS) $(CFLAGS) -o $@ $<
