I do get output with cpp:
cpp -dM /dev/null | grep GNU
#define __GNUC_PATCHLEVEL__ 1
#define __GNUC__ 3
#define __GNUC_MINOR__ 4
and cpp -v gives me:

Configured with: /usr/local/src/gcc-3.4.1/configure
