Thanks to both of you!  Indeed, I was not including gsl_linalg.h, and 
since I've added that, gsl_linalg_LU_det() now works great.  And I've 
been lazy and haven't been using -Wall which would have caught the 
problem.  Maybe this was the original guy's issue!
