Just remembered that there is some ugliness. This differs from the
gtk-doc example:

+gtkdoc-check.test: Makefile
+       $(AM_V_GEN)echo "#!/bin/sh -e" > $@; \
+               echo "$(GTKDOC_CHECK_PATH) || echo ERROR: gtk-check-failed" >> 
$@; \

The upstream example really fails:

+gtkdoc-check.test: Makefile
+       $(AM_V_GEN)echo "#!/bin/sh -e" > $@; \
+               echo "$(GTKDOC_CHECK_PATH) || exit 1" >> $@; \

I hadn't got the time knowledge to fix the errors.
