ignoring VPATH name

Hello,

What makes make print this message:

Ignoring VPATH name `foo/bar.z'.

I looked at the source code but I don't understand how make gets there:
  /* It needs to be remade.  If it's VPATH and not reset via GPATH, toss
     the VPATH.  */
