Thanks for your answer.

At first glance I hadn't noticed that the target names are even more 
intricate: we do use something like
make /dir1/file.suf1 /dir2/file.suf1
(ie where only the directory name is different, but the contents will be 
different based on the full path name....)

I guess I'll have to think about how to be smarter :-)
