Really Really odd error

I am sure this must be really simple, but it escapes me. Here is the code:
a:
@echo $(patsubst 5.9.0_%,%,TEXT_5.9.0_defs)
echo $(patsubst %.c,%.o,x.c.c bar.c)
and the output:
TEXT_5.9.0_defs
echo x.c.o bar.o
x.c.o bar.o
As you can see, the second substitution from the GNU Make manual works, the
first fails miserably.
What gives?
