No one said you shouldn't use a variable. By all means, DO use a
variable. That's good stuff.
Just don't use the $(shell ...) function.
Like this:
SHOWTIME = date
all:
@ $(SHOWTIME)
@ sleep 10
@ $(SHOWTIME)
