The NEWS file only specifies new behaviors (more or less equivalent to
something that required a change in the documentation). NEWS doesn't
mention simple bug fixes. You'll have to search the ChangeLog or
Savannah's bug tracker to find out about a bug.

Right; in my last email I said 3.82 doesn't fix it, but that was wrong:
I was trying 3.81 when it didn't work for me. Sorry about the
confusion.
