Generally, however, if you sit down and write m-file code to do some 
particular task, it will run faster in Matlab than Octave.  Nonetheless, 
Octave is certainly "fast enough" for most small to moderate sized 
computations.  For really large computations, your best bet is a 
compiled language anyway.
