auto scaling means the the graphics application (e.g. gnuplot) will
determine the axis limits so that you can see all of the data as opposed to
manual scaling where the user selects the axis limits, and which might not
show all the data example
plot(1:10)
axis([5,6,5,6]) will show only 2 points of data out of the 10 points.
