IIRC there must have been a dozen of *answers* to this very
question in the archive as of last month alone. If people would
get used to search and read before posting, they wouldn't have to
ask at all. Until they learn to search first, neither won't they
read FAQs, I'm afraid.
But once the inetd / xinetd / tcpserver / whatever examples make
it into the FAQ, maybe one should mention IBM's habit of simply
installing their own (unregistered) application at the cvspserver
port, too? Since this question comes up next, although not as
often as the first one.
And one should stress the -f / $HOME (/root/.cvsrc or
/root/.cvsignore?) thingy as soon as "Linux" is mentioned.
Asking "what's this?" seems popular, too.
