A question for CVS developers. What are the future plans for CVS? I believe
I can say that the winds of change are blowing strong lately. I see a trend
where applications are no longer just a load of C code. Applications are
becoming more and more based on HTTP.
This means applications will be built from not just ASCII text, but also
*.swf, *.dcr, *.gif, *.jpg, *.png, *.xls, *.doc, *.pdf, *.mov, *.avi, *.cct,
*.dll files. A large, very large, portion of these applications are not
built on machines with access to sed, bash, make, (Mac and Windows).
Automated building of a product from separate storage/respositories is not
possible or even desirable.
Will CVS move to capture this market, support this need, fill this void?
Will CVS just be for ASCII text merging processes? I see a large need coming
up and I also see CVS or something like it having the opportunity to be
another Apache/Sendmail. A useful, well built, tested, open source
alternative that does what it does better than commercial tools.
Is CVS looking to grow for the future? Should I and others who build web
based apps start our search for a replacement now?
