Rather than attempt to explain the cause of each error message, the type of
errors suggest to me that it would be more helpful to point you to tutorials
providing a general overview of the steps for working with CVS:
http://www.arc.unm.edu/~rsahu/cvs.html#Brief
Most concise, but it has the immediate answers you need.
http://cellworks.washington.edu/pub/docs/cvs/tutorial/cvs_tutorial_5.html
Bit longer, but has the answers
http://www.cvshome.org/docs/blandy.html
For a more verbose explanation
http://www.csc.calpoly.edu/~dbutler/tutorials/winter96/cvs/
A fuller development, covering more areas
http://cvsbook.red-bean.com/cvsbook.html#An_Overview_of_CVS
A chapter from Karl Fogel's online book. Worth the extra reading, if you want
to grasp the concepts as well as the steps.
Hope this helps,
dtayl
