One can get a little more control with the advisory
lock patches available at
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=471046&group_id=4680&atid=304680
This isn't exactly what the original poster had
requested, but, like you said, notifications are just
as good (in most situations).
