CVS Admin failing despite being in primary group cvsadmin.

I have my user setup in the cvsadmin group on the pserver-cvs server. I
check out to my local workstation and attempt to perfrom a cvs admin -U,
and receive the following error message:
cvs [admin aborted]: usage is restricted to members of the group cvsadmin
This is the output from id on the CVS server:
bash-2.05$ id
uid=5000(mars) gid=105(cvsadmin)
Does the group need to exist on the locahost as well?
