this is exactly what I suggested in my mail:
"cvs tag -r1 REALHEAD"
will create "REALHEAD" as a tag just points to the tip of the trunk - at
least, as long as all RCS revision numbers are 1.x (or 1.x.y.z or
1.x.y.z.w.v or ... - that is, as long you don't use anything else but
"1" as first number, which is not recommended anyway).
Background: The revision "1" is trated as the branch that is the trunk.
