I'm sorry I'm very unpatient. The GMX account I had this problem was
just a free test account. I deleted it because of the troubles. (The
features of this account were: "Outlook and Outlook Express optimized",
so I shouldn't have wondered about troubles.)
Instead I switched my university's account from POP to IMAP, and of
course, all works fine. ;-)
So the problem seems not to be a Gnus one.

*OT*: Does anyone know a free or cheap email provider with IMAP
conforming to standards and a large mailbox (200MB+)?
