purging unwanted groups from emacs knowledge

Hi:

Gnus is taking a long time to find the news.
I've added
(setq gnus-read-active-file 'nil)
to my gnus startup file

If I hit C-g mid-way through the long wait, the back trace shows this.
I've deleted the LONG LISTS OF GROUPS from the backtrace.

Can anyone help me figure out how to purge gnus's knowledge of the
unwanted groups, so it won't spend so much time fetching the news?
