problem with end of lines (sometimes)

Hello

It seems that sometimes text like this

First line \newline
second line \newline

Gets displayed as


First line second line \newline


Is the reason the use-hard-newlines variable? I have also now idea how
to systematically track this down.

PS such a problem does not occur in vm, when sending mail.
