Narrowing this some more, I experience the behaviour when I use my
original ‘~/News/agent/’, ‘~/News/drafts/’, and ‘~/News/marks/’
directories.

I lack the interest to track it down further, and have simply discarded
those directories; everything works fine from this point on.
