Thanks all for the suggestions. Managed to get leafnode / gwene working, that
seems pretty useful.

A follow-up question - the feeds subscribed by gwene now have the form:

"nntp+localhost:gwene.groupname"

is there any way of hiding the "nntp+localhost:gwene." bit for each group (so
that the names take less space in the group buffer)?
