Interesting, 

When I try and use scp I get the login, enter mypassword and then get:

Couldn't open /dev/null: No such file or directorylost connection

replace this ssh command with the sftp command, keep the rest exactly
the same. Because you use ssh there is no sftp-server started, so it
doesn't show up in the traces.
