Hello Oliver,

thank you for getting back to me. It was me! For no reason I typed the wrong path to shell: '/usr/sbin/bash' instead the correct '/bin/bash'. The suggested 'grep jk_ /var/log/*' gave it away at once;

Ubuntu 16.04 is indeed working as advertised, there is no problem with the 'su user_cocunt' either. For the record here is the error line showing the culprit: 

/var/log/auth.log:Jun 18 02:09:21 test jk_chrootsh[29777]: ERROR: failed to execute shell /usr/sbin/bash for user test03 (1006), check the permissions and libraries of /home/jail//usr/sbin/bash

can you check the errors in the logs?

grep jk_ /var/log/*

and can you  try to login without su as well (for example ssh to
localhost). su does something special (it doesn't do a login, but
executes the shell directly) so there is a workaround  in the
jk_chrootsh code. Perhaps the workaround is broken.
