I don't know what the plans are, nor what Neal did this summer
in Karlsruhe. Since I also started work on porting UVM to L4
environment, it would be nice to exchange some ideas...
Right now, I didn't do direct porting, because Pistachio is
not available. Nor are official C bindings (but that is easy
to circumvent with a set of wrappers/macros). Through debugging
and tracing of UVM code, I think that I've got enough feeling
for what's going inside UVM to write a UVM-based memory server
against X.2 spec sometimes in the future.
Can this help the Hurd? I dunno. This would still be a monolithic
approach to memory management (one monolithic VM server task from
which servers would concurrently draw mappings etc...), and there
are probably better, "distributed" ideas and concepts that would
fit the Hurd better.
Neal: I can't wait to hear about your ideas. If you can spare some
time, I'd be nice if you could outline very broadly how recursive
pagers could be applied to the Hurd (that is, if this was what
you've worked on in Karlsruhe).
Regards,
-Farid.
